Guadeloupe

Decidedly French … Undeniably Caribbean!

A Beautiful Butterfly

Guadeloupe, part of the French West Indies, has it all: rain forests, waterfalls, sandy beaches and charming villages. The picturesque islands bask in the sun: Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, La Désirade, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante, five islands which perfectly encompass all the diversity and natural beauty to be found in the Caribbean.

For a sample sailing itinerary with BlueFoot Travel click the ‘Map’ button at the top of the page.

Great Sailing

Trade winds keep the temperature about the same year-round and make the three offshore islands super sailing destinations. On the more rural Terre-de-Haut, part of the Îles des Saintes, you will find a truly picturesque town, historical forts, pristine beaches and families descended from Breton sailors.

To the south-east is Marie-Galante, where some of the Caribbean’s best rum is produced. Remnants of colonial sugar mills are quaint reminders of the island’s past as a sugar producer. The anchorages and beaches are spectacular.

Snorkelling Heaven

The wildlife is awe-inspiring. Look up and you might spot sugarbirds, cow herons, black woodpeckers, moorhens and brown gannets.  Look below the sparkling clear water and you will find picture perfect corals and tropical fish at the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Park (http://www.atlantisformation-guadeloupe.com/en/Discover-the-Cousteau-Marine-Park-its-wildlife-and-outstanding-marine-life_a8.html). This is one of our regular stops when we sail here, as the corals are spectacular.

Gastronomic Delight

French imports make dining on Guadeloupe a pleasure; in fact, its restaurants have given it something of a reputation as a culinary destination, boasting more than 200 restaurants, some on the front porches of local homes. The local cuisine is a blend of French and African flavours, with lunch, or le déjeuner, the main meal of the day. Start with a Ti’ Punch, then try Creole creations such as stuffed land crabs, stewed conch and curry dishes.
